Note the phonological and semantic development hmrkr --> hmrkl (Qumran) --> ˀmrkl. In Second Temple times in Hebrew clearly connected with finances (see Jastrow s.v.), but in the targums it would appear that, with the loss of initial heh, the popular etymology may have prevailed.
