שָׁמִיר   n.m.  flint, adamant; stone-cutting worm


  hard flint  JLAtg, Gal, PTA, Syr, LJLA.  TgJ Jer17:1 : בִטפַר שָמִיר חֲרִיתִין עַל לוּחַ לִבְהוֹן  inscribed on the tablet of their heart with a stylus of flint.  TN Deut32:13 : כיף שמיר טינרה.

  the shamir: a legendary (?) worm that cuts stone [based on an interpretation of Ezek 3:9]  JLAtg, JBA, LJLA.  TgJ Ez3:9 : כְמָא דְשַמִירָא תַקִיף מִטִנָרָא.  PJ Num22:28 : מנא ובירא וחוטרא דמשה ושמירא וקשתא וענני יקרא ופום ארעא וכתב לוחי קימא ומזיקי ופום ממלל אתנא  manna and the well (at Massa and Meribah) and Moses' staff and the šamir and the rainbow and the clouds of glory and the opening in the earth (that swallowed Qorah) and the writing on the tablets of the covenant and the demons and the speaking mouth of (Balaam's) ass.
