cause Jud, JLAtg, CPA, Syr, JBAg, Man, LJLA. TgJ 1Sam22:15 var. : לָא יְשַוֵי מַלכָא בְעַבדֵיה פִתגָמָא/עילתא/‏ [=MT אַל־יָשֵׂם הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּעַבְדּוֹ דָבָר בְּכָל־בֵּית אָבִי]. TgRuth4:22 : ובההיא עילא שכב צדיקא‏ the righteous man died by that cause.

evidence, basis of proof PTA, Syr. TN Deut22:17 : עלילן/עלין/ דמילין למימר לא אשכחית לברתך סהדוותה‏ false charges (var. pretext words) saying: I did not find your daughter's evidences (of virginity).

In LJLA often confused by scribes with עַוְלָה "wickedness, sin".
