אִילָן‏ n.m. tree

tree Com. Dan4:7 : וַאֲלוּ אִילָן בְּגוֹא אַרְעָא‏ and there was a tree in the middle of the Earth. Dan4:23 : לְמִשְׁבַּק עִקַּר שָׁרְשׁוֹהִי דִּי אִילָנָא‏ to leave the root-stem of the tree's roots. 4QEnastr d 1 I:4 : ושתוא הוה ועלי כל אילניא‏ it was winter, and the leaves of all the trees .... TgJ Is7:2 : אִילָנֵי חוּרשָא‏ the trees of the forest. TN Gen2:9 : אילן חייא‏ the Tree of Life. PJ Gen3:3 : אילנא דבי מציעות גינוניתא‏ .

as a collective: trees Nabatean, Jud, JLAtg, LJLA. TgO Ex10:15 : וְלָא אִשתְאַר כֹל יָרוֹק בְאִילָנָא וֻבעִסבָא דְחַקלָא‏ there was no green thing left on the trees and the ground vegetation. PJ Gen1:11 : ואילן פירי עביד פירי ליזניה דביזריה ביה‏ fruit trees producing fruit of their kind whose seeds are in it.

In the targums, this word can also be used in referring to a vine, inasmuch as Hebrew עץ is so polyvalent.
