כַּרְכּוֹם   n.m.  siege works

siege works  JLAtg, PTA, LJLA. I shall build siege works against you and pile up a glacis against you. TgJob41:19 : יחשב לתבנא פרזלא לקיסא סריחא כרכומא  he thinks iron is straw, siege works just rotten wood.

bronze (? see note)  LJLA. TgJob41:19 : יחשב לתבנא פרזלא לקיסא סריחא כרכומא  he reckons iron to be straw and the strongest material to be rotten.

Greek χαράκωμα ( Lehnw 300). Jastrow and others list a second homonym "bronze" (i.e., from Greek χαλκ...) where the targums render forms of the root נחש, but this may be incorrect. The context there is probably always that of weapons of siege warfare thought to be among the strongest of substances. On the other hand, the apparently related (see Levy) LJLA word כרכמישא clearly means "lead".
