The Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon

Text Information

MegAntioch: The Antiochus Scroll according to the critical edition of M. Z. Kaddari, מגילת אנטיוכס הארמית, Bar Ilan 1 (1963): 81-105; available now online with an English translation at The Open Siddur Project. The language is a simplistic combination of JLA and Biblical Aramaic forms, which prompted Kaddari to argue that the text was authentically old Palestinian. In fact the language is simplistic--adding nothing of value to the CAL lexical database-- and the word choice demonstrative of a non-master of Aramaic, thus the language comports with more recent studies (e.g., Aryeh Kasher
Proceedings of the American Academy for Jewish Research
Vol. 48 (1981), pp. 207-230) arguing for a medieval date to the text. That the author thought Jerusalem has a river is especially telling in this regard. The vocalization given here follows Kaddari's ms. and is of value only to indicate the reading tradition of the transcriber.
