Compare Akkadian pasāsu, "to obliterate, cancel." Presumably this verb has disappeared from Syriac because of the near homonymy of its most frequent afel form with the extremely common borrowing from Greek -- pys vb. -- (with which pss #2 is also semantically related!), whereas in Jewish Aramaic dialects the latter appeared as a pael and thus remained distinct.
