Syr. regularly ܓܸܢ݂ܒ‏, esp. in the compound ܥܲܠ ܓܸܢ݂ܒ‏; see s.v. ˁl gb prep. The form גונבא at PsJ Dt 14:9 is influenced by the JBA word meaning "tail" as shown by incorrect variants of דונבא at TgJob 40:17. JBAmb also גמבא and even גופא .

In Syriac the meaning is always "side" with the exception of the usage referring to the hump of a camel. In Babylonian dialects, however, the reference seems to be to the upper quadrant of an animate being viewed from the side; i.e., as with "sides", animate creatures have two of them!
