Often thought to be a loan from Greek γλύφω, but the relationship is actually uncertain since the Greek form looks very Semitic. The mutual relationship among qlp, glp#2 "to peel", Akkadian gallābu "barber" (itself a loan from Sumerian?), the Greek, and our word remains uncertain.
