In JLAtg there is rampant confusion between G and C forms both as to meaning and thematic vowels. It is probable that originally there was a thematic vowel distinction in the G stem between "to borrow" and "to lend" that has become quite confused. Presumably "to lend" had the /u/ vowel in the imperfect.
