In JBA, properly speaking, the peal should mean "to study a Tannatiic tradition", the pael "to transmit a Tannaitic tradition", and the afel "to teach a Tannatic tradition", but confusion of forms is rampant both in the texts and in the learned tradition. However, a regular distinction is traditionally made in the peal between active forms and passive forms, where the latter (e.g. והא תניא) is a marked form that almost always (always?) refers to a barraita rather than to the mishnah.
