For the common prepositional and adverbial usages see under the collocations. N.B.: The decision to list one or another of these collocations as a separate lemma is not always a straightforward one.
For the meaning "with" do not confuse instrumental b_ with locative ˁm.
in some LJLA mss. one finds a form בי, both as an independent and proclitic before the third person pronoun in the sense "in that one". This is to be seen not as based on the JBA form of בין, but rather a real phonological development from bhāhī -> bayhī, etc. The JBA form, on the other hand, is surely responsible for the scribal tendency to spell it as a separate word. In any case this usage is to be kept separate from those instances where the yodh is a simple vowel letter.
